The Cold War superpower model — built on force projection, fossil fuel coercive leverage, and exportable ideology — is in terminal decline. What replaces it is not anarchy. It is a China-anchored, infrastructure-based hegemony with a structural interest in the sovereignty of the nations it penetrates. Read the full framework →
A nation that builds a solar and battery-based energy system accepts a front-loaded dependency on the supply chain that constructs it — and then achieves, once construction is complete, a dramatically lower level of ongoing external dependency. The sun does not have a shipping lane. It cannot be sanctioned.
We’ve released a multimodal version of Nehanda, as always with strong epistemic grounding and the ability to maintain ground truths even under adversarial prompting. Now with vision capabilities, reducing the upsteam demand for OCR when using the model to research old, scanned research PDFs.
📅 Asoba Events
At Enlit Africa 2026 — Project & Investment Network, Cape Town
This week (19–21 May, CTICC Cape Town), Asoba is in the room at Africa's largest energy gathering — participating in Enlit Africa's Project & Investment Network, the structured deal-making environment co-located within the main event and designed specifically for developers seeking capital and investors seeking bankable pipeline. The P&IN format is deliberately small and senior: 200+ executives, DFIs, utility buyers, and developers in structured matchmaking sessions with the explicit purpose of reducing the distance between "interesting" and "bankable." 7,200 professionals, 250+ exhibitors, 70 countries represented. If you're at the CTICC this week, come find us.
Last week, Gertie represented Asoba on a panel related to enterprise AI at the Africa Automation Indaba in Cape Town

🔥 AI, Energy, and Geopolitics
Africa
State Asset Reforms and 200-Megawatt Solar Project Top Egypt-UNDP Economic Agenda — Turnkey renewable infrastructure paired with state asset reform is now the dominant framing for energy independence across North Africa. The 200 MW headline is less significant than the combination: when a country pairs grid-scale solar with structural state reform, it is building the institutional architecture that makes the asset durable.
Zero Tariff Policy Boosts Economy — China's Africa zero tariff framework is the "Helper Civilization" strategy in operational form — building influence through economic participation rather than military presence. The contrast with Western conditionality frameworks is not subtle. One offers trade terms; the other offers governance conditions.
Americas
The Iran War Reminds Us: We'll Never Be Energy-Independent with Fossil Fuels — The argument is structural, not ideological: every middle power still running its economy on fossil fuels is paying a coercive rent to whoever controls the supply chain above it. True energy security and fossil fuel dependency are incompatible by definition — not because of climate policy, but because of geography and chokepoint arithmetic.
Asia
Unbeatable China? Beijing a Global Focal Point as Russia Pins Hopes on Putin-Xi Summit — Russia's relationship with China is now described in the mainstream financial press in the language of economic subordination. A former peer competitor selling discounted hydrocarbons into a supply chain priced in Beijing's interest is not a strategic partner. It is a client. The inversion of empire is complete.
US Extends Sanctions Waiver on Russian Seaborne Oil: What it Means for India — India's navigation of competing sanctions architectures is a live demonstration of the stable middle power thesis: sufficient strategic autonomy to maintain independent energy sourcing relationships without complete alignment with either declining patron. The waiver exists because the US needs India's non-alignment more than India needs the waiver.
Petrol and Diesel Prices Hiked by Nearly 90 Paise/Litre — Fossil fuel coercion does not require intent. It operates automatically: a conflict in the Persian Gulf reprices fuel at the pump in Delhi within days. The middle power that still runs on imported hydrocarbons is permanently exposed to geopolitical events it cannot control and was not a party to.
How China is Becoming the Gravitational Centre of Global Diplomacy — The frame has shifted from "rising power" to "indispensable architect." China is not seeking entry into the existing order. It is positioning itself as the constructor of the replacement. For middle powers, the question is not whether to engage with this reality but how to do so on terms that preserve strategic optionality.
Why China's Yuan is Gaining Appeal — The structural plumbing for de-dollarization is being built while the Iran war provides the political cover. Yuan-denominated trade structures are not replacing the dollar system — yet. But they are building the redundancy that makes a rapid transition possible when the next shock arrives.
Europe
Inside the 'Kill-Zone' on Ukraine's Front Line, Where New Weapons Have Transformed War — The economics of warfare have structurally inverted. Defense is cheap; offense is ruinous. The Guardian's frontline report is field validation of what the IISS documented in two years of Russian materiel losses: massed armored advance against a prepared defending population is financially self-defeating at any scale. A nation that can field drone swarms and layered anti-air networks does not need military parity with a great power. It only needs to make the cost of subduing it exceed any plausible benefit.
Iran Activates Air Defenses over Qeshm Island near Strait of Hormuz after Alleged Drone Sighting — The world's most consequential energy chokepoint is now being actively contested by drone — systems assembled for hundreds of dollars threatening infrastructure whose disruption would price into global energy markets within hours. Hormuz risk is no longer scenario planning. It is live operational pricing.
🏆 Inside Asoba
Entering the Endeavor Network
Asoba is entering the Endeavor network — the global high-growth entrepreneurship organization whose 2,900+ portfolio companies have generated $88.5 billion in revenue and 4 million jobs across 45+ markets. Endeavor selects for founders with the potential to transform economies, not just build companies. The program will provide access to mentorship that comes at a critical time for Asoba as we start to expand our team and build core SOP’s for the high volume of clients we are starting to onboard.
The Utility Ledger: A New Category for Energy Infrastructure
Asoba, LTM Energy, and NXT have combined to deliver South Africa's first fully integrated Utility Ledger — the system of record for energy asset lifecycle from feasibility analysis through carbon credit issuance. SCADA monitors but doesn't settle. ERP manages finances but doesn't understand physics. Billing reconciles but doesn't optimize. Carbon tracking happens in Excel. The Utility Ledger is the category that closes all four gaps in a single unbroken data thread. Currently our consortium has an exclusive partnership with telecom giant NTT to deliver this utility ledger (under the name Consolidated Energy Cockpit) to a pipeline of over 200MW managed by its energy services clients across the SADC region.
The Asoba Sessions Podcast
Gertrude and Shingai are now on mic. The Asoba Sessions covers what it actually takes to build Africa's distributed energy future — data gaps, grid negotiations, VPP architecture, the infrastructure decisions that don't make it into the press releases. Three episodes are live, including a deep conversation with EPC Technical Sales Manager Zane Grobler on why so many solar projects underperform despite looking correct on paper, and a two-part founders' dialogue on raising capital in a venture ecosystem that systematically mislabels African market risk. No hype. Follow on Spotify.

🌍 Heard Around the World
"No country will be energy-secure or independent as long as its fuel supply remains finite and fossilized and its power plants and energy grids centralized and fossil fuel-dependent. Those are sitting ducks, targets very vulnerable to attack by adversaries"
For nations that can keep their own houses in order, the collapse of American and Russian power projection is not a threat to be managed. It is the most significant geopolitical emancipation since decolonization — and unlike decolonization, it arrives without a war.
